Kandy IELTS College · Updated Fri 23 Oct
The IELTS General Training module is designed for individuals who are planning to migrate to English-speaking countries for work, training programs or secondary education. It focuses on everyday language skills needed in social and workplace contexts. The test is divided into four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. To prepare for the IELTS General Training module, you can follow a course that covers these components in depth.
Test format
- Listening: about 30 minutes, 4 parts, 40 questions
- Reading: 60 minutes, 3 sections, 40 questions
- Writing: 60 minutes, 2 tasks (at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2)
- Speaking: 11 to 14 minutes, a face-to-face interview with an examiner, in 3 parts
Listening, Reading and Writing are taken one after the other with no break. Depending on the test centre, Speaking is on the same day or up to 7 days before or after it. The whole test takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes.
What is different in General Training:
- Reading: texts from everyday life, such as newspapers, books, notices, company handbooks, advertisements and magazines
- Writing Task 1: a letter, for example asking for information or explaining a situation
- Writing Task 2: an essay
